De goudmijn van Newmont Suriname te Merian is internationaal gecertificeerd. Deze voor het bedrijf belangrijke mijlpaal werd afgelopen week bereikt. De mijn in het Paamaka-gebied kreeg een volledige certificering conform de International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC). Dat meldt het goudproductiebedrijf vandaag, woensdag 7 februari 2018, in een persbericht, aldus de Ware Tijd. Het International Cyanide Management Institute maakte een en ander 2 februari bekend in onderstaand bericht.

De certificering werd behaald op basis van een gedetailleerd auditbevestigingsrapport opgesteld door onafhankelijke, externe controleurs. Zij evalueerden Merian aan de hand van het verificatieprotocol van het International Cyanide Management Institute.
De onafhankelijke auditors vonden dat Merian volledig in overeenstemming is met de Principles and Standards of Practice van de ICMC. 'De ICMC is een vrijwillig verzekeringsprogramma van derden. Deze certificering betekent dat Merian de beste werkwijzen heeft geïmplementeerd met betrekking tot aankopen, transport, verwerking, opslag en de recycling van cyanide', aldus Johan van Huyssteen, directeur van Merian.
Newmont Mining Corporation werd in 2005 één van de eerste ondertekenaars van het ICMC en vereist dat alle wereldwijde operaties onder haar auspiciën worden gecertificeerd. De certificering is voor een periode van drie jaar en Merian zal in 2021 een hercertificatie-audit ondergaan.

Newmont Mining Corporation’s Merian Gold Mine Certified Under International Cyanide Management Code
The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) announced today that Newmont Mining Corporation’s Merian Gold Mine in Suriname has been certified in full compliance with the International Cyanide Management Code (Cyanide Code).
ICMI has received and accepted a Detailed Audit Findings Report prepared by independent professional third-party auditors who evaluated the Merian Gold Mine against ICMI’s Verification Protocol and found it in full compliance with the Cyanide Code’s Principles and Standards of Practice. The Summary Audit Report and Auditor Credentials Form are available on Newmont’s Signatory Company Page on the Cyanide Code website: https://www.cyanidecode.org/signatory-company/newmont-mining-corporation. The operation must be re-audited every three years to evaluate continuing compliance with the Cyanide Code.
The Cyanide Code is a voluntary industry program for companies involved in the production of gold and/or silver using cyanide and companies producing and transporting this cyanide. It was developed under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee. The Cyanide Code is intended to complement an operation's existing obligation to comply with the applicable laws and regulations of the political jurisdictions in which the operation is located.
ICMI has been established to administer the Cyanide Code, promote its adoption, evaluate its implementation, and manage the certification process.
